When you’re looking for a turf grower in Sydney, there are a few questions you should ask to make sure that you’re buying from someone who knows what they’re doing.

Do your research before choosing your turf grower. A great grower should be able to answer all your questions confidently, giving you advice on the best variety for your yard, as well as providing speedy delivery of freshly-cut turf.

Is the turf grown and produced by you?

Firstly, make sure they’re actually a turf grower. There are plenty of 3rd party suppliers that simply buy and resell turf, rather than grow it themselves.

It’s always better to buy directly from the grower for a few reasons. The first reason is that it’s more likely to be fresh as it’s grown on-site. Another reason is that growers are more equipped to answer questions about different varieties of turf, as they have actual hands-on experience in its production.

Is the turf cut to order?

If the answer to this question is ‘no’, stay well away from this grower. Turf should always be cut to order – as a living product, turf is not meant to be stored.

The shelf-life of turf that has already been cut is very short, this is only exacerbated by temperature and exposure to the elements. Storing turf for long periods of time causes discolouration and dehydration which severely impacts the health and aesthetic of the product.

What is the turnaround time for delivery?

It’s always preferable to work with a grower that is able to offer speedy delivery of their turf. You don’t want your project to be held up due to waiting for your turf to arrive.

You also want to be able to plan for when it gets delivered. Again, due to adverse effects of storing turf, it’s best to lay it on the same day that it arrives. The more efficiently you can agree on turnaround time with the grower, the easier your turf laying project is going to be.

Do you offer different varieties of turf for different applications?

A quality turf grower will have several different varieties of turf for you to choose from. There are different styles of turf for every application, so you should be able to discuss your options with a grower to help you choose the one that best suits your needs.

Tell your turf grower about where you’re planning to lay your turf. Does it get a lot of direct sunlight? Is it going to be used by kids or be well-tread? Is it for a manicured lawn? A good turf grower will be able to make recommendations based on your set up and give you insights on the right turf for you!

How long has the company been operating?

Turf growers that have been in business for a while have the added benefit of bringing many years of experience to the table.

If a grower has been in the industry for a while, it’s more likely that they have expertise and knowledge that has been passed down over the years. This means they’ve had more time to perfect the quality of the turf that they grow and how they service their clients.

If you’re interested, ask your grower what’s kept them in the turf business for so long. When it comes to turf growers with lots of experience, more often than not, they’ll tell you it’s because they love what they do!

Is the turf ethically produced?

Does your turf grower have any certified Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR) varieties? PBR refers to the rights granted to an original breeder of a new variety of turf. This gives the breeder complete ownership and control over everything to do with their turf’s propagation.

It is a legal requirement to be licenced by the original breeder in order to grow and sell any PBR varieties. Unethical production of PBR or imitation PBR turfs is an infringement on the original breeder’s rights.

Ask your grower whether they’re certified to grow their PBR varieties and where they source their seeds from.
