Nullarbor Couch is a good all-round couch grass specifically selected for your climate. This makes it a good choice for work, rest and play, producing a manicured lawn when maintained regularly.

One of the best features of Nullarbor Couch is its ability to tolerate high foot traffic from people and animals, hence its popularity across both residential and sports landscaping projects such as football and cricket grounds.

Producing a very dense turf, Nullarbor Couch Grass is widely used for sports and commercial landscaping projects as well as home gardens, as it is suitable for hard wearing areas yet soft to walk on.

  • Care Instructions

For a newly installed Nullarbor Couch Turf lawn, keep the turf consistently moist for the first 2–4 weeks by watering daily (and more frequently during hot or windy weather) until the roots establish and the turf cannot be easily lifted. Avoid heavy foot traffic during this period. Once established, gradually reduce watering frequency and switch to deeper, less frequent watering. Wait until the grass reaches about 5–7 cm before the first mow. Never mow more than one third of the leaf.

Avoid fertilising immediately after installation unless recommended by your supplier. A quality lawn fertiliser can usually be applied after establishment.

  • Idea Fertiliser

Apply Lawn Solutions Premium Lawn Fertiliser once your turf is established. It is specifically formulated for lawns and provides balanced nutrition with both quick- and slow-release nutrients for healthy growth and colour. Remember to follow the manufactures instructions and water you lawn after your fertilize unless stated.

Spring (September–November): The best time to fertilise. This encourages strong growth as the weather warms up.

Summer (December–February): Apply another feed if your lawn is actively growing. Water well after fertilising.

Autumn (March–May): Fertilise to help your lawn recover from summer and prepare for cooler weather.

Winter (June–August): Most warm-season lawns need little or no fertiliser. Cool-season lawns may benefit from a light application if they are still actively growing.

The turf that outperforms in high-traffic areas

Nullarbor Couch is renowned for its exceptional wear resistance, making it an ideal choice for high-traffic areas. Whether it’s a sports field, playground, or a family backyard frequented by children and pets, this hardy turf can withstand heavy use while maintaining its appearance. Its dense growth habit promotes rapid recovery from wear and damage, helping to keep the surface lush, healthy, and resilient throughout the year.

For sporting fields, Nullarbor Couch delivers a durable, high-performance playing surface capable of handling intense foot traffic and regular use. Its strong wear tolerance, quick recovery, and excellent turf coverage help maintain a consistent and safe field condition, even under demanding circumstances. In addition, its drought tolerance reduces water requirements, while its fine leaf texture provides an attractive, professional appearance, making it a practical and reliable choice for a wide range of sporting applications.

Frequently Asked Question

How often should I water Nullarbor Couch?

While Nullarbor Couch is known for its drought resistance, it still requires regular watering to thrive. During its establishment phase and hot summer months, it’s crucial to water deeply but infrequently. This practice encourages deep root growth and ensures that your lawn remains lush and green. Aim to water the lawn early in the morning to minimise evaporation and allow the grass to absorb the moisture effectively.

How do I prepare my soil for laying Nullarbor Couch?

Proper soil preparation is essential for the successful establishment of Nullarbor Couch. Start by removing any existing grass, weeds, and debris from the area. Loosen the soil to a depth of about 100 mm to promote healthy root penetration. Additionally, levelling out the soil ensures an even surface for laying the turf. Adding a layer of quality topsoil can further enhance the establishment process by providing essential nutrients and improving soil structure.

Can Nullarbor Couch grow in shaded areas?

Nullarbor Couch is quite versatile and can tolerate up to 25% shade. However, it truly thrives in full sun conditions, requiring at least 5-6 hours of sunlight per day to maintain its robust growth and vibrant colour. In areas with partial shade, consider increasing the mowing height slightly to help the grass capture more sunlight.

How do I maintain Nullarbor Couch during winter?

During winter, Nullarbor Couch enters a low dormancy phase, which means it slows down but doesn’t completely stop growing. To maintain its health, keep an eye on its water needs and adjust your watering schedule accordingly. Reduce mowing frequency as growth slows, but be prepared for a quick resurgence in spring. A light application of fertiliser in late winter can give your lawn a head start when the growing season begins again.
